Oyston faces big decision

KARL Oyston’s search goes on this morning for a new Blackpool manager.

Pool made Nigel Adkins their number one target after his shock sacking by Southampton on Friday.

Chairman Oyston spent the weekend trying to make contact with the 47-year-old and is still waiting for a response.

Adkins’ stock has never been higher after leading the Saints to back-to-back promotions and leaving them 15th in the Premier League.

While it’s understood the Bloomfield Road challenge interests Adkins, it may be too soon for him to return to management and many believe he will wait for a possible return to the Premier League.

Pool have spent over a week contacting out-of-work managers and making official approaches to others in jobs. They have seen approaches for Lee Clark (Birmingham), Phil Parkinson (Bradford) and Karl Robinson (MK Dons) rejected, while Sean O’Driscoll preferred Bristol City.

A number of managers have been interviewed, with Nick Barmby, Keith Hill, and Paul Ince all eager to be given a chance.

It’s understood Oyston is keen on a manager with good Championship experience, which brings the likes of Billy Davies and Owen Coyle into the frame.

Former Pool manager Simon Grayson, now at Huddersfield, Manchester United legend Roy Keane and Swindon boss Paulo Di Canio have also been linked with the post over the weekend.

No-one at Pool is talking on the record about the search, apart from caretaker boss Steve Thompson.

He said: “I’ve said from day one that Karl Oyston will make the decision and hopefully the right decision for Blackpool Football Club.

“I want to be number one, of course I do. I’ve always said I’m ready to be number one, but whatever Karl decides I’ll back him 100 per cent

“I’ve just been in temporary charge but we’ve not actually sat down and spoken. That’s Karl’s decision – that’s why he’s chairman.”
