SIMON Grayson has been linked with a shock return to Blackpool.
The 43-year-old was a hugely popular figure during his three years in charge at Bloomfield Road before quitting to join Leeds United in December 2008.
Grayson was instantly installed as the bookies’ favourite for the vacant Pool job after being sacked by Huddersfield yesterday.
Despite complications surrounding his departure four years ago, Grayson and Pool chairman Karl Oyston have remained friends and will no doubt have a chat about the situation today.
However, it’s not expected that Grayson will be high on Oyston’s list of targets and talk of him being ready to return may be premature.
Under Grayson, who had joined Blackpool as a player in 2002, the club won promotion to the Championship in 2007 on the back of 10 successive wins, crowned by victory over Yeovil in the play-off final at Wembley.
After three years at Leeds, the club he had supported as a boy, Grayson took over at Huddersfield last February.
The Terriers were promoted last season, but they have found life in the Championship tough and are without a win in 12 games.
The former Preston and Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies had been the bookies’ favourite for the Pool post earlier in the week after a flurry of bets were placed on the Scotsman on Tuesday. While he is admired by Oyston, it is understand Davies would have to compromise on his demands in order to be appointed at Bloomfield Road.
Oyston has a list of targets and is waiting on a number of developments before making his move.
Caretaker boss Steve Thompson will be in charge for a fourth game tomorrow, when Pool visit Wolverhampton.
Thompson himself isn’t out of the running for the permanent post, and a win at Molineux could go a long way to boosting his chances.
Despite having an approach already rejected, Pool are also considering another go at Birmingham boss Lee Clark.
