BWFAC's Japp joins the elite women

With the tragic event in Manchester nearly a week before, the Manchester 10K and Half Marathon was an emotional event.

For Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde AC’s Emily Japp it was a chance to rub sholders with athletic royalty as she was on the elite women’s start.

World 5,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba won the elite women’s race in 31:03 with Japp seventh and third British lady in 35:38, while the mass start saw Claire Irons run 64:38.

Wheelchair athlete Isaac Towers made a first competitive trip abroad this season to compete in the LA-SM Rollstuhlsport meeting held at Arbon in Switzerland.

Competing in the T33/34 categories, Towers won the 200m (28.95s) as well as finishing second in the 100m, 400m (53.35), 800m (1:41.35) and 1,500m (3:13.53).

The second Mid Lancs League meeting was held at Witton Park.

Three members of the Rutter family competed with Nia winning the long lump (4.90m) and taking second in the shot put (10.54m).

Husband Jon was first in the high jump (1.50m) and recorded 13.0s in the 100m, while daughter Gracie competed in the hurdles as well as the long and high jumps. Susan Ball was second in both the discus (26.79m) and hammer (20.88m) as well as third in the shot put.

There were several local road races over the Bank Holiday weekend.

At the Catforth 5K, the first BWFAC finisher was James Greenaway (fifth, 17:35).

Paul Beech was 20th (19:41), leading in Michelle Tickle (28th, 21:01), Simon Tickle (30th, 21:35), Jeff Wilson (34th, 22:04) and Kirsty Holland (49th, 25:59).

Michelle Tickle also ran in the Fishwick 5 Mile Trail Race in Preston, finishing 24th in 41:14.

At the Hutton Roof Fell Race, Peter Singleton was 90th in 1:17.02, and in the 10K Beach race, Alan Wilkinson was 24th in 49:22.

At the Lytham Hall parkrun Simon Tickle posted a new PB of 20:53 for eighth place, as did Lohan Sparrow with 25:30 (58th).

The other BWFAC runners were Paul Sparrow (25:30, 59th), Alan Smart (27:08, 77th), Bernard Singleton (86th), Bob Massey (29:53, 110th) and Howard Henshaw (31:01, 117th).

Alison Titterington was 50th in 25:18 and David Twizell posted a PB of 26:13 for 61st.
