THERE’S no substitute for experience – and so it proved at Lytham St Annes Road Runners’ Carnival 5K.
Veteran runners won both the men’s and ladies’ races as the annual event on St Annes seafront was blessed with perfect summer weather.
Paul Mannion of Astley and Tyldesley won the men’s race in 16mins, 36seconds, 17 seconds ahead of Eddie Simpson.
Both runners are in the vet 40 category, while Fylde coast veterans filled the next three places – Alex Rowe of Wesham, Steve Waterhouse of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde and Nigel Thompson of LSA.
By contrast, sixth place went to the host club’s Sam Banner, who recorded 17.50 on his 18th birthday.
Two previous winners led the ladies’ field, with BWF’s Caroline Betmead winning in 17.55 from LSA’s Susan Samme (19.23).
The younger Maria Lowe of Astley and Tyldesley finished third in 19.45.
The 5K was the climax of a successful Carnival weekend for LSA Road Runners, which included two fun runs aimed at children.
Around 200 entered the mini fun run in Ashton Gardens and 76 older children ran in the one-mile event which preceded the main 5K.
