More than 1,500 people went to a family fun day at the City Learning Centre in Bathurst Avenue to enjoy entertainment, games, rides, a fun fair and micro-chipping of pets from the RSPCA..

The aim was to raise funds for The Youth Club, a new venture for five to 16 year old youngsters in the Grange Park area which will meet twice a week.

One of the organisers Shelley Glay said the event had been a great success and the club had raise more than £180 for equipment and also donated £72 to the RSPCA.

She said: “It was really busy all through the day and I would like to thank everyone for coming along.

“We had a little trouble with the Silcocks fun fair as it took up too much room and blocked some of the stalls so I would like to apologise for that. I tried to resolve that problem on the day but we will offer those who were blocked in a free stall next time.

“We are using the money raised to get resources for the kids.

“We have ordered dodgeball vets, cricket, rounders and baseball bats and balls, basket ball hoops and football nets. We are also getting paints and art and crafts materials.

“We have got 40 children signed up for the clubs already and we signed up twelve more on the fun day as well as getting more leaders to volunteer.

“Our junior leaders and members worked hard all day and we could not have done it without them.

“I would like to thank them and the City Learning Centre for letting us hold the event there.”

She said the The Youth Club will be held on a Wednesday evening from 5 to 7pm at the Horsebridege Community Centre, Horsebridge Road and on Saturday afternoons from 3 to 6pm at the Argosy community centre on Argosy Avenue.

Shelley added: “We are going to hold a taster session at the club on Wednesday May 18 and have our official opening on May 21 at Argosy Avenue.

“The kids in the area need somewhere to meet and take part in activities and so we hope that everyone will support us and come along.”
