These local leisure workers are reaping the rewards of diving into apprenticeships and lifeguard training after securing full-time work.

Trio Rob Cousins, River Starkey and Rob Perch have landed jobs with Blackpool Council after completing a year of dedicated on the job training in fields ranging from lifeguarding to activity leadership.

The youngsters have achieved the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, a Level 2 NVQ in exercise and fitness and earned certificates in leisure operations, circuit training instruction, activity leadership and instructing adolescents.

Another apprentice, Jack Harrison, has also passed the lifeguard qualification and remains an employee of the local authority.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, who met and gave a talk to the trio at the start of their apprenticeship, said he was extremely proud of their progress.

He said: “It’s great to see these young lads doing so well. Now they are polished and extremely professional members of staff and you can see the difference.

“It’s a credit to them and a credit to the staff who have taken them under their wing.

“We always want to give opportunities to local young people wherever we can and this is a prime example.”

The youngsters said the apprenticeships have given them a range of skills.

River Starkey, 18, from Blackpool, said: “The course has been great and we learnt as we went along, the training has helped.
