VANDALS who embarked on a wrecking spree in Grange Park playgrounds were today blasted as “mindless.”

Plants were torn out, a window broken, roof tiles smashed and a sand pit scattered across the playground at Christ the King Primary School.

The Sure Start Children’s centre on the estate was also targeted as play equipment was damaged and plants ripped up.

Pupils turning up for school at the Bathurst Avenue site yesterday were forced to stay indoors as staff hurried to rectify the damage, thought to run to hundreds of pounds.

Sarah Smith, headteacher, said: “This is just a sickening act of mindless vandalism which is utterly pointless.

“It hurts the children most as they have had their story area destroyed and sand pit ruined.

“As cuts are made to budgets, things are harder to replace.”

Both the school and Sure Start are stepping up security after a number of incidents to their premises over previous weeks.

The damage to both sites is believed to be linked and caused between midday on Sunday and the early hours of Monday.

Nadine Booth, who has two children at the school said: “It’s disgusting these mindless youths broke into the school grounds and caused damage.

“Plants the children have put in were strewn right across the playground, it was horrible for them to see.” The neighbourhood policing team is appealing to the public to be vigilant and help safeguard the area from further vandalism.
