A wife smashed her husband in the head with a wine glass in a row over a jacket.

Susan Buckler swung out an arm while holding the glass at a party and caught her husband on the side of the head.

But Preston Crown Court was told Mr Buckler did not provide a statement for police and did not want his wife to go to prison.

Buckler, 45, of Sandy Lane, Preesall, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The attack happened at a party in Park Lane, Preesall, on June 29.

Mr Buckler decided to go inside for his jacket and that sparked a row between the couple.

David Clarke, prosecuting, said the woman expressed concerns about the cost of the jacket and his alleged
“financial recklessness”. It was claimed that her husband was smirking.

The prosecution said she then slapped him to the face while holding the glass.

Blood immediately started to pour from the wound. Mr Buckler was taken to hospital with a 6-7 centimetre long cut over his right temple which needed five stitches.

Richard English, defending, said what happened that evening had been the culmination of a 16-year relationship. It was a “very sad state of affairs,” he said.

The couple were now separated and a divorce was being sought.

There had been difficulties and the row over the jacket had been “the straw that broke the camel’s back,” he added.

Mr English told the court: “She has never been in a police station or a court before. She has lost her good character.

“She is ashamed to be in court and to have been in a police cell overnight.

“She is desperately sorry for what happened. She didn’t mean for it to happen. There was no thought given to it.

“She reacted spontaneously in what had been a difficult relationship”.

The woman was sentenced to six months’ prison, suspended for a year, with12 months’ supervision.
