A youth has been arrested after fire crews were called to a major blaze close to Blackpool Football Club.
Part of Central Drive - close to the junction with Rigby Road - had to be closed off by police as 10 firefighters tackled a blaze in a storage container on land near Revoe Park.
Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around shortly after the container - which was packed with rubbish - caught fire at 6.50pm on Tuesday.
The container was on disused land next to homes, and firefighters claim the blaze could have put lives at risk if they had not acted quickly to extinguish the fire.
Crew manager Pete Hanley, of South Shore Fire Station, said: “As we were approaching there was large volumes of thick black smoke in the distance and when we arrived we found the container was well alight.
“We used two jets to extinguish the fire.
“It could have been more serious if the fire had spread to the houses next door.
“The road was closed off so we could get water out of the mains to attack the fire.”
The youth was arrested on suspicion of arson and taken to Blackpool police station for further questioning.
