Emergency crews, including fire engines, an ambulance and a number of police vehicles, were called to the scene, close to the junction with Moorland Road and the road has been closed in both directions.

A 34-year-old man has been taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Witnesses described hearing an “explosion”.

A passerby, who asked not to be named, said: “There was a massive bang and a rumble.

“There’s quite a big hole in the road now.”
