They may be cute, they may be cuddly, but for one afternoon all friendships were put aside as characters from across Blackpool competed in the official Mascot Games.

Colourful stars from the resort’s top attractions went head-to-head in St John’s Square in Blackpool yesterday, as they took part in a series of events to be crowned the 2013 winner.

Last year’s Grand Champion, Jungle Jim, from Blackpool Tower, defended his title against strong competition from 2011 champions Bling and Balula from Sandcastle Waterpark, as well as Harry the Hound from Houndshill Shopping Centre, Sea Life’s Sharky Shark, Chuck and Charlie Chipmunk from Radio Wave and Barci the Cockerel from Nandos.

John Filmer, from Marketing Blackpool, said hundreds of spectators enjoyed a keenly fought contest.

He added: “The crowds loved the events. We had characters competing against each other in a number of challenging disciplines including musical deckchairs, the egg and spoon race and bean bag race.

“After several close events, three finalists went through to the grand final.”

Sharky Shark from the SeaLife Centre, Bling from the Sandcastle and Bearemy from Build a Bear faced off in a relay race, with Bling coming out as champion.

Natalie Wyatt, managing director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “The Mascot Games is a really popular event in our calendar and we all look forward to what is always a really fun day.”

As well as this year’s winner being crowned, Rocky the Resort Pass, The Blackpool Resort Pass’ new mascot was revealed.
