Officers were called to the toilets, opposite Gynn Square, at around 3pm today, and found the man's body inside one of the cubicles shortly after.

He is understood to be in his 60s, but formal identification has yet to take place, a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out in due course, while a file will be prepared for the coroner.

One eyewitness told The Gazette how the toilets were cordoned off by tape earlier this afternoon.

They added: "There’s three or four police cars and a CSI van and they’ve just brought a mobility scooter out the toilets."

The scene was clear by 5pm.
