United front will halt the frackers
A GREEN campaigner says a protest against fracking over the weekend proves the strength of feeling against the controversial drilling technique.
Hundreds of people opposed to gas extraction on the Fylde coast set up a protest camp – Camp Frack – over the weekend.
Campaign Against Climate Change protesters want energy company Cuadrilla Resources, which has sites in Singleton and Weeton, to stop shale gas drilling and fracking – which releases gas trapped in a seam of shale for use as an energy source.
They had been expected to bring Camp Frack to Singleton for a protest close to the company’s Grange Road site.
But after the firm’s rig was moved to Hesketh Bank, near Southport, organisers moved the demonstration.
Local campaigner Philip Mitchell, chair of the Blackpool and Fylde Green Party, who attended, said: “It was great, we had lots of people come and march at the site.
“It showed the feeling against this because a lot of local people came on the march and are determined they don’t want to see it.
“If the Government policy is continued I think we will see more like it. People were brainstorming ideas and exchanging views and supporting each other in the campaign. I’m sure something will happen around here next.”
Fracking on the Fylde coast has been suspended while the cause of nearby earth tremors earlier this summer are determined.
Cuadrilla said it is convinced there is a significant amount of gas which can be extracted beneath Lancashire and they will continue to consult with the public.
