A vital route between two Wyre towns has re-opened three weeks ahead of schedule.

Tithebarn Street bridge, which links Poulton and Carleton, was shut on January 7 to allow essential maintenance work to be carried out by Network Rail.

But the work to electrify the railway between Blackpool and Poulton was completed ahead of schedule and the bridge was re-opened by the Mayor of Wyre yesterday.

Jon Clee, from Network Rail, said: “While the road closure at Tithebarn Street was unavoidable, we are fully aware of the impact it has had and would like to thank businesses and residents for their patience and understanding while we carried out this essential work.

Coun Peter Gibson, ward councillor for Breck, said: “It’s a relief to everybody the bridge has now opened and good news that it’s open earlier than expected, so businesses and residents can return to what it was like before.

He added: “We all recognised there was going to be short term pain for long term gain to improve connectivity.”
