Three cut from car after rail bridge smash

Three people have been cut from a car which smashed into a railway bridge.

The incident happened at 6.15pm on Singleton Road in Poulton.

Two cars were involved, one of which, a Vauxhall Astra, had been travelling at speed when it hit the bridge support.

Due to difficult access on the narrow lane fire crews. from Blackpool, had to approach the scene from the opposite direction.

They were forced to remove the doors, tailgate and roof of the Astra to allow paramedics access to the car.

The three occupants of the Astra and one person in the other vehicle were all freed and taken to hospital for treatment.

Network Rail officials visited the site to carry out safety checks on the bridge, which is on the main rail line between Blackpool North and Preston.

Services were delayed while the inspection was carried out.

The road was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared.

An accident investigation is now under way.
