MOTORISTS are being advised to avoid the M62 as heavy snowfall has caused part of it to close.
The freak snowfall on the highest motorway in Britain overnight and again at 10am today led to lorries jack-knifing and the road being blocked.
Neil Sterio, spokesman for the Highways Agency, said: “The M62 is currently shut from Junction 21 towards Leeds and has resulted in long queues back to Junction 14 on the M60.
“We have had really serious heavy snow around Rochdale and West Yorkshire.
“Lorries trying to get up the hill became stuck and blocked the road.
“We are now working on releasing the trapped traffic and clearing the road of snow.”
