A resident who lives on a busy Blackpool road has told how the road collapsed just yards from where she was walking.
Trisha Hurst was walking along Palatine Road when she heard the road give way and a big hole appear in the ground.
The 40-year-old said: “I just couldn’t believe it.
“I heard this noise - it was like the road was dropping. As I got nearer I could see people starting to gather around and a hole had opened up in the road.
“I don’t know what it is - someone suggested a collapsed sewer but it isn’t good news.
“The road has completely been blocked by workmen now.
“It could have been really bad if a car had been travelling on it when it collapsed.
“You pay Council Tax so the council can maintain the roads but when this happens it makes you wonder what they have been doing with it.”
The hole appeared around 9.30pm on Thursday and the council closed the road on Friday lunchtime.
Repairs are expected to take at least a week.
A Blackpool Council spokesman said: “Palatine Road has been closed between Montreal Avenue and Ripon Road due to a fault on the carriageway.
“Repair works have now commenced and are expected to take around a week.
“An access only section of the road is open between Park Road and Whitegate Drive and traffic is being diverted along Hornby Road and Cumberland Avenue.
“Access to the Blackpool and The Fylde College campus is being maintained via Park Road only.”
