Safety call at junction after double smash

Fears have been raised over a busy junction following two crashes in the space of four days.

Today, one councillor called for changes to be made to prevent a more serious smash at the junction of Anchorsholme Lane East and Fleetwood Road on the border of Blackpool and Cleveleys.

The plea follows identical accidents on Sunday and Wednesday last week in which cars crossing the southbound lanes of Fleetwood Road ended up being broadsided.

It’s a situation which is all too familiar to Coun Paul Galley, who represents Anchorsholme on Blackpool Council and has seen first hand what can happen at the junction.

He said: “I’ve been there myself, out at that junction helping people after an accident.

“It’s happening all too often.
“Drivers aren’t doing anything wrong.

“If you are coming from Blackpool and turning right you don’t expect to suddenly find all the southbound traffic coming at you.

“There are too many accidents and there seem to be more and more happening.

“I’m going to speak to the highways team to see what can be done.”

One solution Coun Galley is keen to consider is a dedicated phase in the lights sequence to allow traffic to cross Fleetwood Road.

He knows it may slow the traffic flow through the area but believes it would make the busy junction safer.

“I think a dedicated turn phase might be the way to go,” he said.
“I’ve had a look at how it works in Victoria Square in Cleveleys, just up the road and it certainly makes sense.

“It might cause delays but that’s not necessarily going to happen.

“It will certainly help make the section safer, especially for visitors.

“Locals might know to look out but we have a tourist economy and a lot of people might not be aware of the danger at this particular spot.”
