A MAJOR rural route will be closed from next week to allow vital rail work to take place.
Network Rail is closing Carr Lane, in Treales, while it carries out electrification work on the line.
The road will close on Wednesday, September 12 and is expected to remain closed until December 13 to allow the firm to remove and reconstruct the railway bridge.
The road is the main route between Kirkham and Treales, and businesses have raised fears the closure could have crippling consequences.
A diversion will be in place, with drivers needing to travel down Carr Lane, Dowbridge, Blackpool Road, Lodge Lane, Clifton Lane, Station Road, Treales Road and Kirkham Road to avoid the closure.
Pedestrian access along the road will be maintained but the 578 bus service will also be diverted during the closure.
Plans to close Station Road, in Wesham, later in the year have been altered after Network Rail developed a plan to keep the road open during work.
