New buses to lead revolution

The first of 10 new double deckers was unveiled in St John’s Square on Thursday with crowds flocking to get a first look at the design.

Blackpool Transport has invested £2.2m in the latest additions to its fleet.

And the company is planning to spend an additional £5.5m next year to replace a further 25 worn out vehicles.

All of the new buses are wheelchair accessible and offer audio visual destination announcement.

Disability campaigner Steven Brooks, who is a non-executive director of Blackpool Transport, believes it shows the company’s commitment to improving transport for everyone.

“We are building an infrastructure here,” he said.

“We’re talking to Network Rail at the moment about setting up an information sharing point at the station

“The company has come a long way in a short time.

“It’s not just the vehicles, it’s the staff as well.

“Northern Rail and Transpennine Express are going to be coming to Blackpool Transport so we can share with them our way of working.

“The new buses will no doubt contribute to a very bring future for all travellers in Blackpool.”

The new buses, built in the UK, will be introduced on the number nine route, from Cleveleys to Lytham next week.

As well as improving the experience for passengers they will also help Blackpool Transport provide a more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly service.

One potential passenger was certainly impressed.

Connie Poole, 74, from Layton said : “They look comfortable and clean and bright and I’m looking forward to catching one.”
