WORK to reconstruct a railway bridge has been approved by Blackpool Council.

Network Rail is proposing to replace Lawrenson’s Bridge at Little Carlton as part of improvements to the rail infrastructure.

The work is necessary to enable the electrification of the line between Blackpool and Preston.

A report to the council says: “In order to electrify the railway a series of different phases of work are to be undertaken, including vegetation clearance, foundations, parapet upgrades and supporting stanchions for the overhead power lines.

“In addition, works may include the demolition and replacement of existing bridges, which is required at this location.”

Work needs to be done at the Carlton site to bring the bridge into line with minimum requirements for clearance between the rails and the underside of the bridge.

The bridge will be removed and replaced with a new deck and parapets.
