The derailment of a tram containing the first fare-paying passengers due to sand on the tracks at Fleetwood today took the shine off the launch of the gleaming new fleet of Bombardier Flexity trams.

The 5am service slid about two feet off the tracks as it approached the northern end of the tramway at Fleetwood Ferry.

No-one was hurt and the tram was undamaged following the drama.

Blackpool Transport was forced to curtail services at Fisherman’s Walk but it was hoped to resume normal service later this morning.

Managing Director Trevor Roberts said: “There were a lot of enthusiasts on board.

“We could have done without it on the first tram but it shows we can react and that’s what we need to learn.”
