Fatal collision woman named

AN ELDERLY woman who died after being hit by a post van in a car park has been named.

Audrey Rimmer, 77, was involved in a collision with the Royal Mail Ford Transit van in the car park of the Lemon Tree Court apartment complex, off New Road, Squires Gate.

Mrs Rimmer, was a resident at the complex, which lies at the junction of Squires Gate Lane and Clifton Drive North on the border of Blackpool and St Annes.

It is believed the van was reversing in the private car park, which Mrs Rimmer was attempting to cross on foot, when the collision took place at 11.25am on Monday.

She was taken to the Royal Preston hospital with serious head injuries following the incident, where she later died. The van driver, who is from Blackpool, was unhurt in the incident.

St Annes North councillor Howard Henshaw offered his sympathies.

He said: “I know a lot of the residents there because it’s on my patch and I’m very sorry to hear about this.

“I can’t place her by name but I probably knew her by sight. I send my condolences to her relatives.”

A spokesperson for the Royal Mail, Morag Turnbull, said: “Royal Mail regretfully confirms that a Royal Mail driver was involved in a road traffic accident yesterday morning in Lemon Tree Court, St Annes.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mrs Rimmer and Royal Mail is co-operating fully with the local police with their investigation into this incident.”

Mrs Rimmer’s family have been informed.

An investigation is under way into the circumstances of the collision.

Sergeant Finn Quainton from the Force Road Policing Unit said: “Sadly Audrey sustained serious head injuries which later proved fatal at hospital.

“I would appeal to anybody in the vicinity of Lemon Tree Court on Monday morning who witnessed this collision to contact police.”
