The union which supports coastguards in the UK has revealed serious concerns at the number of staff available at a key site which covers the Fylde coast.

Almost half the rescue co-ordinator posts at Liverpool coastguard station were unfilled this summer, said the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS).

Maritime and Coastguard Agency figures show the station should have 18 full time workers, but only 10 are in a post.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “It is deeply troubling that at the coastguard’s busiest time there are such large holes in staffing.

“Senior officials need to address this urgently.”
