Their tour of Blackpool Transport’s Rigby Road site was topped off by a trip on board one of the gems of the heritage feet – a restored double-deck ‘Balloon’ tram number 717.

The Year One youngsters were shown where old trams are repaired, rebuilt and restored using techniques that have changed little since the 1930s.

Teacher Lisa McLoughlin, who organised the trip with the depot’s Heritage Trust, said: “The children had a really enjoyable time, and the staff at the tram depot were very informative and helpful.

“After the visit, we have been doing a project about how Blackpool trams have evolved over the years from the 1920s to the modern trams we see today.”
