ENVIRONMENTAL Health bosses were called in after a road was closed when a slurry trailer overturned, spilling manure over the carriageway.
A tractor was travelling through Elswick when the trailer it was pulling overturned at the junction of Beech Road and Copp Lane at 5.42pm on Monday.
Heavy machinery was brought in to move the trailer from the road while police, council officers and nearby residents worked to clear the slurry.
Nearby resident Steve Anderson said: “Around four police cars were on the scene to control traffic as efforts were made to pull the trailer upright again.
“It had spilled a large part of its load onto the road, so conditions were a bit dangerous.”
Due to the contents of the trailer, Environmental Health was contacted by officers concerned about a possible threat of contamination to nearby drains, but a check by United Utilities found no drains in the area.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “A number of members of the farming community came out to try to clear up the manure and officers contacted Environmental Health.”
Part of the road was closed off overnight and the council was called in to clear the highway yesterday morning.
