Motorway resurfacing work delayed

The westbound M55 is to be closed for three nights to allow repair work to take place.

Work due to begin today to resurface part of the M55 motorway has been delayed – and will now mean road closures later this week.

The work, which is due to take place at the western end of the westbound carriageway close to the roads into Blackpool, was scheduled to start today and continue into Tuesday and Wednesday.

But that work has now been rescheduled and will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday instead.

The £66,000 project is taking place along the westbound carriageway around the far western end of the motorway at junction 4 where it meets routes into Blackpool.

The work will now take place overnight between 8pm and 6am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

There will be alternate closures of the exit slip road onto the roundabout at junction 4 where it meets the A583 Preston New Road or the main carriageway west of junction 4 where the motorway merges with the A5230.

Clearly-signed diversions will be in place for each of these closures.

Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said: “This is routine work to tackle wear and tear along this section of the M55 and is designed to give drivers smoother journeys along this busy commuter and visitor route into Blackpool.

“We have timed the work to ensure it is taking place outside the main summer and Blackpool Illuminations holiday periods.”

Roadworks have been carried out on the eastbound side of the motorway as it goes on to the southbound M6 in recent weeks, which have seen some closures at night.
