An overturned vehicle caused queues on the motorway for traffic heading away from Blackpool this afternoon.

Emergency services said it was “very lucky” nobody was seriously hurt when a van turned onto its side close to junction one of the M55 heading towards the M6 southbound.

An ambulance was called at 12.40pm and the call handler was told the wheel of the vehicle may have come off, causing the accident.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “The patient got themselves out of the vehicle but they suffered no injuries. The police were called.”

The North West Motorway Police reported that the vehicle had been moved to hard shoulder of the M55 around half an hour later.
