Car fire drama in rally opening

North West Stages Rally on Lower Promenade, Blackpool

North West Stages Rally on Lower Promenade, Blackpool

THERE was drama on the opening day of the North West Stages rally driving contest in Blackpool when flames broke out in the engine of one of the competing vehicles.

The fire was swiftly extinguished and no-one was injured.

It happened yesterday on Lower Promenade, Blackpool, while the cars were tuning up in preparation for the first races last night.

John McNicholson, a steward at the rally, said: “A Metro car caught fire but thankfully everyone reacted very quickly and the flames were soon put out.

“No-one was hurt. It happened as the vehicles were tuning up in preparation for the racing.”
