A car burst into flames while driving at speed along the M55 – causing major delays on the motorway.

Traffic ground to a halt during rush hour last night
after a car caught fire on the slip road as it exited the motorway.

The Mini Cooper was leaving the M55 at Junction Three, near Kirkham, forcing emergency services to close the exit slip road while they made the road safe.

Firefighters were called to the incident at 5.30pm which caused long queues for vehicles heading west towards Blackpool.

Police were also called due to the vehicle being on a blind bend.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We went from a safety point of view.”

Officers arranged for the vehicle to be recovered. The occupants were able to get out and nobody was hurt.

Matrix signs were updated to inform other drivers.

Police said they had cleared the road by 6.30pm, although there were still delays for a short time after that.

No other vehicles were involved and it is not known how the fire started.
