POLICE are hunting burglars who stole £70,000 worth of cash and jewellery during a raid at a Blackpool shop.

Cash for Gold on Lytham Road, South Shore, was targeted some time overnight between Saturday and Sunday by thieves who fled the premises with a haul of rings, necklaces and bracelets.

The shocking break-in was discovered by owner Lynton Carr as he was driving past his premises on Sunday morning.

Mr Carr said: “There were nine carrot gold chains, bracelets and a tremendous amount of rings.

“It was a shock to me but there is nothing we can do.

“I just have to get on with business as usual because gold is needed now more than ever.”

Mr Carr has urged other jewellery stores in the area to keep a look-out for his stolen goods.

He added: “There is a silver plated cup stand and if anyone is offered it they will know straight away it’s mine.

“It’s late Victorian and a very ornate Rococo design.”

Detectives have launched a full investigation and have appealed for the public to come forward to help them track down the raiders.

Det Sgt Paddy Dowling, of Blackpool CID, told The Gazette: “It is likely the offenders gained access to the premises through an alleyway off Hill Street which has gates protecting it.

“We’re looking for anyone who may have seen something suspicious in the area some time between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Since the incident, officers have been going door-to-door in the surrounding area trying to track down anyone who may have seen something out of the ordinary.

They have also been reviewing CCTV images from the shop.

From their initial inquiries officers said they believed the raiders climbed into rear yard via the back alleyway.

They then forced an entry through a rear door where they made their way inside and stole the various items.
