The purr-fect plan for feline funding

Catwoman Sue Darwell has set the wheels turning on her plan to raise money for local animal rescuers.

With her superhero companion, Batman - aka friend Simon Fretwell - she is setting off on the Two Ball Banger Rally from St Omer in north east France tomorrow.

Their aim is to travel through nine countries in four days to reach Nice in the south of France, tackling various challenges along the way.

Animal lover Sue, 40, a single mum of five, from Greenhalgh, is supporting local pet shelters under the Blackpool Cats in Care and Nine Lives charities, which support a network of cat foster carers on the Fylde.

“There are probably in excess of 200 cats in foster care right now,” she said. “A lot of small charities get overlooked and it would be nice to remind people they are there - helping to educate people in animal care, as well as looking after cats.

“We are all volunteers and dedicate massive amounts of time to it. I live on a smallholding and have about 15 cats, plus dogs, horses and pigs at the moment.”

More than 60 cars are all rallying for their own charities, and Sue has collected sponsorship from local charities to fix up the Batmobile ready for the off.

Rally teams will be set various challenges when they set off, in addition to the task of getting to the final destination in run down, revamped motors.

On day three, teams will even tackle the famous Stelvio Pass in the Italian Alps - dubbed the ‘greatest driving road in the world’ by the Top Gear TV show team - with its 48 hairpin bends.

“I’m already having nightmares and we will have to see how it goes,” part-time marketeer Sue said.

“We’re taking on the Stelvio Pass in a car which cost less than £500. It’s only by calling in favours to get it running that it has been taxed and MOTd and on the road.

“I’ve been driving it round this week, and found more problems to fix before we leave. It’s going to be a test of our sanity but we will be bringing back money for such great causes that it will be more than worth it.”

She added the economic situation had made pet foster care all the more in demand.
