A TEENAGE driver and her boyfriend are recovering in hospital after her car crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The 18-year-old was travelling along Preston New Road, near Penny Farm, in Westby, when the Vauxhall Corsa smashed into a tree.

The teen, from Kirkham, and her 19-year-old boyfriend, from Blackpool, had to crawl from the vehicle as it become engulfed in flames.

A passing police officer spotted the drama and helped the couple to safety around 10.10pm on Saturday.

The teenagers were taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where they are said to be recovering from their injuries.

A police spokesman said: “They have suffered serious injuries but not life threatening.

“The 18-year-old girl has got injuries to her back, possibly broken bones in her back.

“But they are not thought to be life changing at this time.

“Her boyfriend has a broken wrist and ribs.

“We have launched an investigation to find out what happened and how the car ended up crashing into the tree.

“We would ask any witnesses to contact PC Helen Carter on the Lancashire Police number 101.”

Two fire crews from Wesham and South Shore were sent to the scene of the crash.

The car was completely destroyed by the blaze.
