A secondary school teacher and mum from Thornton is celebrating after having her third novel released.

Kay Brooks, who teaches English at Brookfield School, Poulton, has endured two brain surgeries in the last two years and a hip replacement – but says writing gave her something to do when she was recovering. And she has been determined not to let any health problems get the better of her.

Her latest work, Visions, is now available to download as an e-book via Amazon.

It tells the fictional story of Gillian Gordon, who is close to finishing her teaching course when she crashes her car.

There are no other vehicles involved in the smash and with medical tests showing no alcohol or traces of drugs in her bloodstream, there seems to be no explanation for the accident.

Gillian, however, is convinced there was someone else there – a boy, full of fury, with dark hair, dark eyes, and a face she can’t quite bring into focus.

There should have been a windscreen separating them, but in Gillian’s mind, he was closer than was possible.

When more visions begin to interrupt her daily life and her mother brings up worrying incidents from the past, Gillian starts to wonder just what exactly she is seeing and why.

Kay, 33, wrote her first novel Between Heaven And Earth at the age of just 18 – as a practice-run for part of her English degree.

But she says she enjoyed writing it so much, her short story turned into a novel.

Her first book was published via Tirgearr Publishing.

The mother-of-two – who lives with her husband of 10 years Chris, and sons James and Christopher, in Thornton – said: “My novels all combine elements of romance and the supernatural.

“I have also had several horror stories published under Scarlett River Press, who were hit by the recession, but are starting afresh as Lycan Valley Press, and an essay on what it is like to live with autonomophobia – a fear of representations of human forms, for example mannequins. (It’s a Small World at Disneyland is my idea of hell!)

“Although I have been busy writing, and have another novel nearly ready for editing, I have not had much published recently due to some health issues.

“I am awaiting another hip replacement at the moment and then, hopefully, I should be back to full health.

“Writing has helped me get through this difficult period of time.

“It gave me something to do when I was stuck in bed recovering.

“My husband is incredibly supportive of my writing.

“It feels great to have Visions finally ready for publication.

“I must add, everything in Visions is completely fictional. I’ve had great experiences during my teaching time at all my schools.”

• Visions is available to read on Amazon Kindle for £1.99 and is out now.
