MUM-OF-THREE Karen Thomas is on a losing streak – and she couldn’t be happier.

The 43-year-old, of Fleetwood, has shed more than 10lbs in just six weeks, after winning a Gazette reader competition.

Her prize was a free place on the YMCA’s new Momenta Weight Management Y:Active Programme.

Karen’s story touched the hearts of the YMCA’s Momenta Team and she was selected for the new 12-week programme to help her lose the weight and keep it off.

Karen, who is married with three boys aged 17, 14 and two, explained how her life over the past two years had been a chapter of health scares and financial worries.

She said: “It took us 10 years and three miscarriages to get our little miracle baby, hence the big gap. We were actually told we wouldn’t be able to conceive again, so he was truly a blessing.

“When my youngest was six months old I found I had skin cancer and after several operations finally got the all-clear this July.

“On top of the health issues, we had a big house fire in January and had to stay in a hotel for three months, living off takeaway food. It was very stressful.”

Now in week six of Momenta, Karen has been sharing her journey through her blog on the YMCA’s Y:Active website.

In the 12 weeks of Momenta, participants learn techniques to help them understand and apply the key elements required to lose weight successfully – including nutrition, physical activity and psychology. They work on identifying key factors which contribute to weight gain.

Karen admits at the start of the programme she wasn’t sure about the method in theory, but decided to stick with it.

As part of the programme and to support individuals during and after the course ends, participants receive a pack with a course handbook, week to week session notes, a Lifestyle Kit including a food diary, activity diary, food label reader and access to the online Momenta participants’ community.

By the end of week two, Karen had come to the conclusion Momenta may work for her.

By week six Karen had lost over 10lb and gave herself a little experiment, carrying the equivalent in bags of sugar around the supermarket.

“I was so glad to put it back on the shelf and can’t wait to be able to put more back in future.”
