A new year-round Sunday train service to Blackpool South has been announced as part of a raft of upgrades across the North.

A host of improvements were revealed as part of the deal that will see Arriva Rail North Ltd take over the Northern Rail franchise in April.

Preston to Blackpool South will get a Sunday service all year round

The Government has confirmed that, as part of the deal, trains will run between Preston and Blackpool South on Sundays throughout the winter.

Speaking in the House of Lords, transport minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon confirmed the news in response to a question on improvements being made to the line.

He said: “Preston to Blackpool South will get a Sunday service all year round.

“At present the line shuts down for a period in the winter, but from December 2017 at least an alternate-hours service will operate all year round. Colne to Preston will get a full hourly Sunday service – twice as many trains on Sunday compared to now.”

He added that refurbishment of the entire Northern fleet will lead to ‘rolling stock improvements across the franchise’.
