Creative students have used their design skills to help a campaign which gives babies a better start in life.
Thirteen second year graphic design students from Blackpool and The Fylde University Centre took part in a one day workshop alongside professional designers to help the Better Start campaign.
The scheme is a partnership between the NSPCC, Blackpool Council, the NHS and other voluntary groups to give babies and young children a better beginning by helping parents with help and support during the first years of a child’s life.
The students assumed the role of designers for the day and were asked to consider the style of the new logo, its colours and, most importantly, the message that Blackpool Better Start should send out.
Second year graphic design student Rebecca Smith, 20, from Freckleton, said: “People see Blackpool as a tourist town but it’s really important that the communities and families who live here feel proud to be from Blackpool and see it as a great place to raise children too.
“Getting that message into a logo is challenging but it’s great to have a proper chance to work on something like this.”
Fellow student Andrew Murdoch, 20, from Lytham, added: “Having professional designers here has been great and has given us an insight into what it’s really like to work in a professional studio.”
The workshop was led by the NSPCC’s graphic designer Ed Berry and copywriter Jade Thomson.
Mr Berry said: “This is the first time we’ve worked corroboratively with students like this and it brings us a unique insight into the Blackpool community which we wouldn’t otherwise have got.
“It’s great to get fresh approaches from young people and a unique perspective both in terms of design and local knowledge.
“Our challenge now is to make sure that comes across in the final visual.”
Gillian Williams, curriculum manager for graphic design at Blackpool and The Fylde College, said: “We’re encouraging more links with business and well-known brands to give our young designers some insight into the industry.
“This is a great example of using local knowledge of Blackpool and fresh design experience together with the knowledge and experience of a respected brand like the NSPCC.”
