Stolen metal in busker’s trolley

Blackpool Magistrates Court

POLICE discovered a stolen haul when they searched a shopping trolley being used by a busker.

Thomas Heaney had filled the trolley with copper piping he had taken from a building being renovated and was trying to make his getaway.

Unemployed, Heaney, 21, of Alexandra Road, South Shore, pleaded guilty to burgling an address on Waterloo Road.

He was sentenced to a two months electronically tagged curfew from 9pm to 7am and ordered to pay £40 costs by Blackpool magistrates.

Martine Connah, prosecuting, said on February 10, at 12.10am, police stopped Heaney as he pulled the shopping trolley along Lytham Road.

His trousers and jacket were covered in mud and dust.

When officers asked what he had been doing Heaney said he had been in a field.

When asked what was in the trolley, he replied “Just clothes.”

After copper piping was found in the trolley, police contacted the owner of the property it had been taken from.

The owner found removal of the piping from the address being renovated had resulted in water running into the property. He said he would now have to replumb a water pipe to the mains.

Gary McAnulty, defending, said Heaney had owed his mother money from a time he had stayed with her.

He usually made cash from busking in the town centre, but the weather had been too bad, Mr McAnulty added.

Heaney took the piping on impulse from a property he knew was empty, hoping to sell it.
