Blackpool MMA fighter Karl Etherington says his upcoming clash with Bobby Lashley was too good to turn down.
The mixed martial arts heavyweight headlines a Bellator 130 bout at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas next month against former WWE wrestler Lashley.
Etherington holds a professional undefeated MMA record of 9-0-0 and made his Bellator MMA debut back in January 2013, where he defeated Jason Fish via first round TKO at Bellator 87.
And he told The Gazette his October 24 show is something he couldn’t miss.
“It’s a massive opportunity for me, even though I’m taking the show at short notice,” he said.
“My fight will be the headline event on the night which I think is the first time a UK fighter has headlined an American show, so it’s a real honour.”
His opponent has a record of 11-2-0, with his two losses coming to the hands of Chad Griggs and UK MMA heavyweight, James Thompson.
Lashley is a former WWE superstar and a big name over in the States, and Etherington thinks the bout could be a stepping stone.
He said: “It will be a big challenge facing Bobby Lashley, but one I’ll be ready for.
“I’m training hard at the moment with Paul Rice from Enigma Fitness and I am feeling in great shape.
“A win for me next month will lead onto potentially a title fight.
“It’s a fight I’m taking very seriously and know I can win.”
