A MAN was taken to hospital after he was found climbing off the end of South Pier.

Police were called to the scene when security guards spotted the 28-year-old acting suspiciously.

Coastguards from Lytham and a Blackpool RNLI lifeboat were also called to the incident at just before 9pmyesterday.

The man was found climbing over the railings at the end of the pier and he was restrained by police.

He was later arrested and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police said although the tide was coming in there was only about two feet of water below and he was at serious risk of falling into the sand and injuring himself.

He was detained under the Mental Health Act and was last night being assessed at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.”

A coastguard spokesman said: “We were called out to reports of a man hanging off the end of South Pier.

“We remained on standby, as police initially had trouble restraining him and he ran back to the railings at least once.
