It’s usually all hands to the pump for them, but firefighters put all hands to the rope yesterday when they lugged a 12 ton engine along the Promenade for charity.

The mammoth effort saw a team of around 20 firefighters work in shifts to pull the engine from North Pier to South Pier and back in aid of The Firefighters’ Charity.

The team, which toiled it way along the Prom during boiling temperatures yesterday afternoon, included firefighters from Blackpool, Bispham and St Annes fire stations.

Organiser Matt Pendlebury was among those pulling the engine while hundreds of tourists and holidaymakers looked on and donated their spare change to collectors with buckets walking alongside.

He said: “We did really well and it’s probably the best turnout we could have hoped for with lots of people on the Prom.

“The buckets were full of donations and we were getting lots of encouragement from people. It’s all be really good and positive, it’s something different for the people who have come here on a bank holiday afternoon.
