Skate star Dan gets sl-ice of the action

Ice skating entrepreneur and Blackpool celebrity Daniel Whiston has helped create around 50 new jobs in a new food court in South Shore.

The 5,000sq ft Beach Tavern Foodcourt, based on South Promenade, houses a Subway, Slice Pizza Company and traditional fish and chip shop Orange Fish.

More than 20 local people have been given jobs at the venue – and there are now plans to expand that over the coming year with the addition of more food and convenience outlets that will create a further 30 positions.

The Beach Tavern Foodcourt has been developed by the Dancing on Ice star and Olympic skating champion Karen Barber, along with their business partners Anne and Ben Wade as well as Steve Richards, the man behind the Orange Fish brand.

Speaking about the new venture Daniel said: “We are delighted with what we have been able to do at the Beach Tavern.

“Until a few months ago this was just a derelict building which was pretty ugly.

“Now you have a state-of-the-art food court in a fantastic location offering a variety of options to both holidaymakers and residents and we’re hoping it will be a huge success.

“Everyone wanted to open for this summer so we have been able to go ahead with Subway, Slice Pizza Company and Orange Fish but then once the season is over there will be further work with the addition of a coffee shop, an ice-cream outlet selling Wallings ice-cream and there will also be a Spar convenience store.

“We have been working with a great team of people to bring the foodcourt together and we are confident it will be a great addition to Blackpool.”

And it is hoped the new venture will also help stop issues with seasonal job losses long associated with seaside resorts.

Beach Tavern Foodcourt will operate during seasonal months – but the Subway staff will relocate to the entrepreneur’s other branches for the winter.

The new outlet is the seventh Subway Daniel and his business partners operate on the Fylde Coast with further outlets in Blackpool, St Annes and Poulton which employ around 90 staff.

“It’s great that so many jobs have been created with Beach Tavern,” added Daniel. “And as we already have five other Subways local to Blackpool, everyone who works for us at the foodcourt will be relocated over the winter to ensure they have a year-round job.”

• To celebrate the opening of the foodcourt and their seventh Subway on the Fylde, Daniel and the team are hosting a Family Fun Day at the South Promenade-based business this Saturday from 1pm.

There will be face-painting and a balloon artist.
