A surgeon whose operating skills were described as “a work of art” was honoured with The Gazette’s Patient’s Award at last year’s Celebrating Success awards.
Now the search is on to find his successor.
Celebrating Success is organised by Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and aims to celebrate the care and dedication of its staff.
And Gazette readers can get involved by nominating NHS staff who they believe have delivered excellent service for The Gazette’s Patients’ Award 2014.
Last year the honour was bestowed on Mr Pasupathy Kiruparan, known affectionately as Mr Kiri, who was nominated by Betty Crichton – a former Mayoress of Blackpool.
In her commendation, Mrs Crichton paid tribute to a surgeon who “radiates a calmness and is charming, charismatic and talented” and whose skills she likened to a “work of art”.
The lead surgeon in breast cancer care was described by his patient as “a giant in his profession who has the ability to take the fear out of the word cancer and give wonderful care to all his patients”.
The Gazette’s Award is particularly special as all nominations are made by patients.
After winning last year’s award Mr Kiri said: “I am very honoured to receive this award, but I just feel I am doing my job.
“I feel very surprised and honoured to be given this award.”
As well as The Patients’ Award, six other awards will be presented at a celebration ball in November.
The categories are: Clinical and Non-Clinical Team of the Year, Innovation and Service Improvement Award, Radio Wave’s Unsung Hero, Employee of the Year and the Chairman’s Award – a special award for an overall winner the chairman feels has stood out for their efforts.
Gary Doherty, chief executive of the trust, said: “The awards are a great way to celebrate and share the best in our organisation, the projects, services and people who are passionate, innovative and committed to providing excellent care.”
Anyone who works within the Trust can be nominated for The Gazette’s Patients’ Award, from doctors and nurses to physiotherapists and even secretaries.
Nomination forms can be requested at www.bfwh.nhs.uk/about/success.
You can also call Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s communication office on (01253) 303059, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The closing date for all nominations is Friday, July 11.
