Schoolgirls hurt in hit and run

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a hit and run driver knocked down two schoolgirls.

The 11-year-olds were crossing the road at the junction of Haweside Lane and Macauley Avenue, in Marton, when the driver ploughed into them in the stolen car.

The driver then sped off, leaving the girls in the road.

Both suffered minor injuries, including bruising and grazing, in the incident, which occured at around 5.30pm on Friday night.

They were treated at Blackpool Victoria Hospital but have since been discharged.

Two men are currently being questioned at Blackpool police station in connection with the incident, and police are appealing for any witnesses to contact the,.

Det Sgt Steve Colman said: “Two 11-year-old girls were knocked over while crossing the road by a stolen vehicle.

“The car, a silver three-door hatchback Rover, had been stolen earlier in the day from Barclay Avenue.

“The vehicle was recovered later and two men are currently in custody at Blackpool police station and the investigation is still ongoing.

“It’s a serious incident and we are requesting the help of the public.”
