ROYALTY is on its way to Blackpool – with figures of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge set to star in a new feature at Madame Tussauds.

The resort has been chosen along with Madame Tussauds in London, New York and Amsterdam to unveil the waxworks to celebrate the couple’s first wedding anniversary.

It is not the first time a figure of Prince William has been on display in Blackpool –a likeness of the duke from his younger days was exhibited at the former Louis Tussauds.

But the new figures promise to be much more life like – with each one costing £150,000 to create over four months.

Although the Royal couple have not attended sittings, they have been fully involved in the process, agreeing which clothes and poses would be chosen.

Catherine will be portrayed in a different style at each venue – and for the Blackpool display her figure will be dressed in an exact copy of the stunning Jenny Packham dress she wore for last summer’s ARK (Absolute Return for Kids) charity dinner in London, the first time she and William attended a public engagement as a married couple.

Matthew Titherington, general manager at Madame Tussauds Blackpool, said: “There are 13 Madame Tussauds and when I heard they were producing these figures, I was first to say we need them in Blackpool because we celebrate the best of British here.

“I think it will help put Blackpool on the international map and it will drive up visitor numbers for the whole resort. We’re creating a new Royal Room with a very regal setting, and it will provide a fantastic holiday snapshot for people.

“These are our first royal figures and royalty is what a lot of people ask for. We’d also like to have a figure of the Queen eventually.

“The Duke and Duchess know their figures are going on display here in Blackpool, and of course William was here to watch Blackpool FC play last year. Who knows, they might pop in to see them sometime.”

Catherine’s figure will also sport an accurate recreation of the sapphire and diamond engagement ring once worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and her wedding ring as well as earrings identical to the ones she wore on the evening.

Prince William will be in a debonair navy suit.

The figures are due to be unveiled on April 18.
