The Ship at Elswick is turning the clocks back to help younger generations give their grandparents a treat they will relish on Grandparents’ Day.
A special three-course meal with retro references will be created on Sunday, September 9, costing what would in 1955 been a grand sum of around one pound, ten shillings and four old pennies - £15.95 in today’s currency.
This will allow grandparents to tuck into starters including a good old-fashioned prawn cocktail and a minestrone soup with toasted cheese crouté.
Mains such as scampi and chips in the basket, gammon, egg and chips, Lancashire hot pot and tasty, fresh Fleetwood fish and chips will be available as a blast from the past, while puddings will include homemade jam roly poly served with custard and a special chef’s trifle.
To round all this off, the special Grandparents’ Day three-course menu will include a half pint of beer (cask or draught) or a glass of sherry or wine (125ml).
While the special three-course menu will only be available on September 9, the retro dishes will be on the menu from today right through to September 9, enabling families to say thank you to grans and granddads throughout the 10 day period.
The Ship’s general manager, John Bentley, is looking forward to seeing lots of multi-generational families eating out together on September 9. He says: “We have an extensive menu, backed with chef’s specials and exciting lighter bites, so diners from any generation can find something to suit their dining preferences and appetite.
“We love to see families of all ages dining out together and hope that by putting on some retro classics, we will be able to encourage children and grandchildren to say a big thank you to their grandmas and granddads, for everything they do.”
Bookings are only required for tables of six or more and can be made on (01995) 672777.
