Saddened residents have spoken of their shock after the body of a man was washed up on the beach at Starr Gate in Blackpool.
Police were called to New South Promenade in South Shore close to the junction with Squires Gate Lane shortly before 10.55am yesterday by the Coastguard.
When they arrived they discovered the body of a man, believed to be aged in his 40s, on the shoreline, close to Blackpool Light Craft Club.
The dead man, who is from Blackpool, has been identified and officers are contacting his family.
A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
Russell Smith, from South Shore, was walking his dog at the end of Starr Gate when he heard sirens.
He said: “I saw two people from the beach patrol going into the sea.
“There was someone in the water.
“They pulled him out and went to work on him. I would just like to sing their praises for the efforts they made, but it was clear that it was not going to be a happy outcome.”
Lamin Njie, 29, from St Annes, said: “I am shocked, this is horrible news.
“It is sad.”
