A LANDLADY has been left shattered after regulars told her about plans to demolish her pub.

A LANDLADY has been left shattered after regulars told her about plans to demolish her pub.

Dawn Ashfield moved into the Falcon Hotel last month – only to find out a week later the brewery wanted to build twelve homes on the site.

Thwaites Brewery, who own the Poulton establishment say it is ‘no longer an asset’ and trade has ‘significantly dropped’.

But Mrs Ashfield says she was given no warning of plans and feels like the brewery has “stabbed her in the back”.

She told The Gazette: “I agreed to take the lease because I was told it would be a long term thing – 12 months at first and on to a two or five year lease.

“But within a week of moving in I find out from regulars that letters have been sent out telling them plans to demolish the building have been submitted.

“I felt so embarrassed I didn’t know anything about it and absolutely furious. I’ve spent thousands on this place.”

If plans are given the go-ahead by Wyre Council, twelve three bedroom semi detached and terrace houses could be built on the Hardhorn Way site.

Mrs Ashfield, 40, says she had a severe asthma attack last week which made up her mind to quit the pub rather than fight.

She added: “The brewery say it could take two years for these plans to come to fruition but I’m not putting my heart into this place for it to be taken away.

“I moved here with my two teenagers to build a future.

“I have given three months notice and am looking for somewhere else to live, I don’t trust Thwaites.”

Geoff Smethurst, a regular for 30 years, says he will be very sad to see his local go.

He said “I remember in the 90s when it won pub of the year and had folk singers and jazz musicians playing all the time.

“It was surrounded by flowers and a real community venue.”

In January, Wyre Council rejected plans to build four houses on the Falcon Hotel’s car park. A resubmission was also turned down in July.

Andrew Buchanan, director of pub operations at Daniel Thwaites said: “Unfortunately the Falcon Hotel is too large a site and not financially viable to keep open solely as a pub, hence we are looking at alternative options.”
