IT was a performance fit for Royalty when Elton John took to the stage for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert as the countdown to his Blackpool gig begins.
The star will open the Blackpool Tower Festival Headland on Saturday June 16, but last week there were concerns for his health after he had to cancel three of his Las Vegas dates on doctors orders.
Marketing Blackpool managing director Natalie Wyatt said: “Elton looked great performing in front of Buckingham Palace, and we too have iconic buildings. It’s not quite the Palace but The Tower is also one of the nation’s instantly recognisable landmarks.
“I’m hoping Elton will wear his pink jacket from the Jubilee concert when he comes to Blackpool!
“There is obviously still a lot of work to do ahead of the event. The wind sails will start going up this week and next week the infrastructure will start to be put in place.
“We are sending out a signal we want to have big events on the headland.
“There are still a few tickets left, which are available through our tourist information centre, and some corporate hospitality packages, available by calling (01253) 478100.”
President of hoteliers group StayBlackpool Claire Smith said she could not wait to see the culmination of years of Promenade regeneration work.
She added: “As well as it being Elton John, the concert is going to be a moment in history for Blackpool because it will be the first concert on the Tower Festival Headland.
“I am curious about how it will look, and really hope it’s a lovely evening.
“It’s a first, so I am excited and nervous at the same time.”
Elton was admitted to hospital in Los Angeles last month, and, although he was released the same day, he was forced to cancel the dates at Caesars Palace.
He will complete his Million Dollar Piano residency in Las Vegas with 11 shows in August, after his European tour this summer.
