Project update: Sustainability at forefront in design of new supermarket

German chain Lidl is set to open what will be its third store in Blackpool in the autumn of this year.

It will be a a sustainable modern building boasting 1,424m² of floor space with a modern glass-fronted façade. 
The building has been designed in such a way as to reduce the CO2emission rate by more than 20 per cent when compared with a building of the same type, size and use.
The level of reduction will be the equivalent to the amount used by a jumbo jet flying more than 700 miles.
Lidl says the fully glass-fronted façade maximises natural daylight entering the building, while sensor controlled sun blinds automatically operate when the sun is too hot. 
The supermarket will have an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing facilities, self-scan checkouts, customer toilets, baby changing facilities and parking.
The site formerly housed Westgate House which was home to around 240 council workers from 15 departments including accounts, emergency planning, health and safety, ICT and licensing.
Bulldozers moved in on August 26 2011 to flatten the building as the departments were transferred to other sites including at Bickerstaffe House in the Talbot Gateway.

A spokesman for Lidl said: “Construction of our new store on Squires Gate Lane is on track and it is due to open this autumn. 
“The store will create up to 40 new jobs and anyone interested should keep an eye out for roles advertised on our careers website.”
